Fans of professional wrestling are familiar with staged brawls.

But on Saturday night, fans witnessed an impromptu, real-time melee at the Barclays Center when a spectator jumped into the ring and tackled 61-year-old wrestler, Bret (The Hitman) Hart, who was being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

A brawl involving WWE superstars ensued. Some onlookers assumed it was just part of the show, a staged fight that is characteristic of WWE events, where reality and scripted narrative are often intertwined.

“It’s a wrestling show, so you don’t ever really know what’s going on when something like that happens,” Andrew Antillon, a spectator who was at the event, told CBS News.

Mr. Hart was delivering a speech during the induction ceremony when the police say a 26-year-old fan, Zachary Madsen, slipped under the yellow ropes of the wrestling ring and knocked The Hitman to the ground.

A group of WWE wrestlers, who were standing ringside, quickly joined the fray, tackling Mr. Madsen and tearing him away from Mr. Hart, the police said.

Mr. Madsen had recently tweeted about several WWE wrestlers, including Charlotte Flair, the SmackDown women’s champion, Daniel Bryan, the current WWE world champion, and Vince McMahon, chairman and chief executive of the WWE.

“ROAD TRIP!! I want to say THANK YOU to @VinceMcMahon for helping guide US to the Main evenT of #WrestleMania35” he posted on April 4, which referred to his plan to attend the WWE’s largest event of the year, WrestleMania, which took place Sunday evening at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Instead he found himself in a Brooklyn courtroom.

Judge Laura A. Ward ordered Mr. Madsen, who faces assault and criminal trespass charges, held on ,500 bail. She also granted two protective orders prohibiting Mr. Madsen from any contact with Mr. Hart and a member of the WWE security team who tried to separate Mr. Madsen from Mr. Hart.

Mr. Hart and the security officer both suffered injuries in the melee, and were treated at a hospital and later released, said Alexander Cane, an assistant district attorney in Brooklyn. Mr. Hart injured his hip as he fell to the ground and was treated at the scene, the police said. But he was able to finish his induction speech.

“An over-exuberant fan surpassed our security at ringside and made his way briefly into the ring,” a WWE spokesman said in a statement. “The individual has been turned over to the proper authorities.”

After Mr. Madsen was arrested, he told the police that “I just felt like it was the right moment,” Mr. Cane said. He had a ticket to the event but was not authorized to be inside the area cordoned off for the ceremony, Mr. Cane said.

In the courtroom, Mr. Madsen appeared to have scratches on his face, and wore camouflage pants, sneakers and a gray hooded sweatshirt. The attacker had been wearing similar clothing, along with a red, yellow and green hat with fake dreadlocks.

While arguing for bail, Mr. Cane said that Mr. Madsen has been arrested three times in Nebraska since December for stalking and violating protective orders. The Omaha World-Herald reported that Mr. Madsen is awaiting trial for violating a protective order against a mixed martial arts fighter who claimed Mr. Madsen had been stalking him.

Mr. Madsen’s public defender, Alysha Seroussi, told the judge he had no convictions and was employed until a few months ago after graduating from the University of Nebraska in 2015. She said that Mr. Madsen did not pose a flight risk, and that paying a ,500 bail would be a “hardship” for his family.

Mr. Hart is considered one of the greatest wrestlers in WWE history. Born into a wrestling family, he gained fame in the 1980s and 1990s.

His character, The Hitman, worked as a part of a two-man tag team with Jim (The Anvil) Neidhart. Both men were easily recognizable because of their matching bright-pink garb. Mr. Neidhart, who died at age 63 last year, was also being honored on Saturday.
